Professional Counseling In Work With Difficult Youth

Ao fim de quase trinta e um anos de serviço docente embarquei numa
experiência completamente diferente. Viajar para aprender mais sobre um tema atual
e importante para a sociedade em geral “Professional counseling in work with difficult
youth”, foi o ponto de partida e o mote para uma aventura que se revelou bastante
inovadora e produtiva.

Em Portugal foi divulgado e apoiado pela Associação “Mais Cidadania”, que foi
incansável nos contactos, na organização e orientação dos participantes.
O Curso de Formação realizou-se na Polónia, e foi organizado pela
ONG “Sempre a Frente Foundation”. Teve como objetivo principal ajudar as pessoas
que trabalham a nível profissional com jovens em risco, dando-lhes todos os
conhecimentos e ferramentas necessárias para intervir, para que assim possam
efetivamente ajuda-los a integrarem-se no mercado de trabalho e a desenvolverem
diversas competências.
Tenho a dizer que o tema por si só me aliciou desde logo, pois é uma área que
me sensibiliza, uma vez que contacto diariamente com crianças, muitas delas em
situações de risco.
Inicialmente a barreira da língua assustou-me, mas aos poucos foi ultrapassada
com a ajuda e colaboração do outro participante português e de todos os restantes
elementos do grupo.

A experiência partilhada com pessoas de diferentes países, com diferentes
idades e vindas de diferentes áreas profissionais foi de uma riqueza extraordinária e
de valor indiscritível para mim, como pessoa e como profissional da área da educação.
De entre os participantes da Georgia, Itália, Lituânia, Polónia, Portugal,
Roménia, Ucrânia e Turquia, destaco algumas profissões: psicólogos, professores,
sociólogos, economistas, conselheiros de carreira, youth workers e estudantes. Na sua
maioria gente ainda muito jovem e com experiência no trabalho com jovens (nem
todos).

Foi um grupo de participantes muito coeso, animado, divertido e bem humorado
e particularmente muito motivado para aprender, participar e partilhar as
suas experiências profissionais.

Particularmente importante foi perceber as realidades de outros países
europeus nesta área e, ao comparar com a realidade portuguesa, conseguir dar valor
ao que existe no país onde vivemos – Portugal. Perceber também que podemos e
devemos envolver-nos mais na sociedade como elementos pró-ativos contribuindo para
um futuro melhor.

Os formadores, Mateusz Małyska e Aleksandra Franczak (Ola), apresentaram-se
sempre muito bem preparados, com técnicas inovadoras e dinâmicas de grupo muito
atuais e apropriadas que nos motivaram bastante para a parte teórica do Curso de
Formação. Além de formadores, foram parceiros e amigos e partilharam com todos as
suas experiências e saberes de uma forma extremamente profissional, bem como
acessível e criativa.
A Organização “Sempre a Frente Foundation”, na pessoa da Ola Kulik, também
merece um agradecimento, pela receção e brio com que nos recebeu no seu país.
Por fim e não menos importante, antes pelo contrário, um agradecimento muito
especial à Associação “Mais Cidadania” que confiou em mim e me proporcionou uma
experiência verdadeiramente inesquecível e, acima de tudo, enriquecedora.

After almost 31 years of teaching, I embarked in a completely different experience. Traveling to learn more about an important topic to society nowadays (professional counseling in work with difficult youth) was the starting point for an adventure which came to be very innovative and productive.

This training course was promoted in Portugal by Associação Mais Cidadania and all the support was provided by the people working there, before and after the project.

The training course happened in Poland and was hosted by Sempre à Frente Foundation (an organisation founded by a Polish person who was a volunteer in Portugal). The main goal was to support people working with youngsters at risk, providing knowledge and tools that would enable these workers to better support the youth in job market integration and the development of a wide range of soft skills.

The topic was interesting for me from the beginning since I work daily with kids, many of them having sensitive life conditions.

Initially, I was discouraged by the language barrier but little by little I overcame this obstacle with the help of the other Portuguese participant and the rest of the team.

To be able to share experiences with people from so many different places, ages and work fields was extremely meaningful and valuable for me, both as a person and as a professional in the field of education.

The participants were coming from Portugal, Georgia, Italy, Lithuania, Poland, Romania, Ukraine and Turkey and they were psychologists, teachers, sociologists, economists, coaches, youth workers and students. Most of them quite younger than me but already experienced in the field of youth work (though not all of them).

The group ended up to very cohesive, funny and easygoing and also very motivated to learn, participate and share experiences and strategies.

It was specially significant to get to know the realities of other European countries when it comes to disadvantaged youth and to compare it with the Portuguese reality, being able to value the good things we have here; also to understand that we can and should get more involved in how the society evolves, proactively contributing to a better tomorrow.

The trainers, Mateusz Małyska and Aleksandra Franczak (Ola) were extremely well prepared, using innovative methods and group dynamics that were appropriate and exciting, having motivated us all to the theoretical part of the training. Besides trainers, they were partners and friends and they shared with us their own experiences and learning in a professional yet relatable and creative.

The Sempre à Frente Foundation, specially Ola Kulik, also deserves an acknowledgment for the warm reception they provided us with.
